Roulette call bets

When it comes to online casino games, nothing captures the excitement and class of live casino gameplay like Roulette. Not only is this table game very popular at Royal Panda Casino, but it is also one of the most well-known casino games around the world.

Picture a professional croupier managing a spinning roulette wheel, as a group of punters place their bets on the green felt along the roulette racetrack and table. Or perhaps, a digital roulette wheel where you simply need to wager on the predicted outcome of a game round.

The actual gameplay may be quite straightforward, however, roulette gambling can be full of surprises for those players who dare to try exciting bets.

In this article, we will be covering roulette call bets, which are a special type of roulette bets that are predominant in the European and French variants of this game.

Key terminology when placing roulette call bets

But before we start discussing bets and roulette table payout amounts, we have to cover some popular terms that are key to understanding how this game is played.

Firstly, there are three main variations of roulette that players can play at Royal Panda Casino. These are the European, French and American variants. The key difference between these games is the amount of numbers present on the roulette wheel.

European and French Roulette have 37 spaces numbered 0 to 36, while American Roulette adds the double zero (00) for a total of 38 spaces. Here are some key terms to keep in mind when playing roulette:

  • Pockets – these are the numbered spaces on the roulette wheel where the ball will land at the end of the spin.
  • Table layout – this is the green felt cloth that covers the roulette table, with numbers corresponding to the pockets in the wheel.
  • Zero – the green pocket in the roulette wheel located between 26 black and 32 red.
  • Double Zero – the additional green pocket in the American roulette wheel that is located exactly opposite the single zero.
  • Racetrack – An oval-shaped track located on top of the layout, where players can place call bets. An American roulette racetrack is generally not used to place call bets.
  • Dolly – when a winning number is landed on the roulette wheel, the croupier will place the Dolly on the table indicating this number. When a Dolly is on the table, no bets can be placed or changed.

Main types of Roulette bets

There are two main types of bets to keep in mind in roulette gambling. These are the Inside and Outside bets, each of with come with its subtypes of bets and roulette payout amounts.

In fact, while it is true that roulette is an online casino game of pure chance, there are many different roulette strategies revolving around betting that players can use.

Inside bets

These are the bets that players can place on the inside of the table layout, and are regarded as being higher-risk bets. This means that they have a high roulette table payout but are less likely to land.

Here are the main inside bets that you can place:

  • Straight Up – you simply pick one number and wager on it.
  • Split – you place a wager on the line between two numbers.
  • Street/Row – you place a wager on three connected numbers.
  • Corner – you place a wager on a corner that connects four numbers.
  • Sucker/Basket – an exclusive American Roulette wager, where you place your chips on the numbers 00, 0, 1, 2, and 3.
  • Line/Double Street – you place a wager on six numbers that intersect two rows.

Outside bets

These are bets that are placed on the outside of the table, and are generally favoured by roulette beginners as they have a lower roulette table payout.

Here are the key outside bets to take note of:

  • Odd – you place a wager on either the 18 even or 18 odd numbers.
  • Red/Black – you place a wager on either the 18 red or 18 black numbers.
  • Low/First 18 – you place a wager covering the numbers 1 – 18.
  • High/Second 18 – you place a wager covering the numbers 19 – 36.
  • Column Bets – you place a wager on 12 non-sequential numbers in a column. There are 3 different possible column bets.
  • Dozen Bets – you place a wager on one of the three sets of dozens on the table layout, 1 – 12, 13 – 24, 25 – 36.

Roulette call bets

To better understand roulette call bets, we must take a brief look back at the origins of roulette. This table game was created in France, at a time when Aristocrats were keen on new games.

In fact, the French variant of roulette is the only version that still comes with a more complex yet stylish form of betting – it should come as no surprise that Roulette Call Bets are sometimes referred to as ‘French Bets’!

Call bets in French Roulette are placed on the roulette racetrack on the table layout which covers a special set of numbers. As implied, players must call these bets out loud in order to place the chip on the roulette racetrack. When playing at an online casino, this fun vocal format is not possible, so players would simply place the call bets digitally before the wheel starts spinning.

There are two main categories of call bets that players can place.

Variable call bets

Players can place variable call bets. These are wagers that cover different sections on the roulette wheel. These types of call bets depend on the player’s preference. There are two main variable call bets to choose from:

  • Neighbours
  • Final

Neighbours

The Neighbours call bet, or Les Voisins, is a wager that covers five numbers on the roulette wheel. A player must select one number to wager on, and then also bet on the two numbers on either side of it.

As such, the neighbours bet can be also seen as a straight up bet since it allows for some degree of flexibility in the choice of numbers. Seeing as this bet covers 5 numbers, it also costs the player 5 chips.

Finals

The finals bet comes in two different formats. The Finale en Plein Bet is a wager on a single number, that also combines other numbers that end with the same final digit. Depending on the player’s choice, this can become a 3 or 4 number bet. For example, if the player places a wager on 5, this final bet will cover the numbers 5, 15, 25, and 35.

The Finales a Cheval Bet is similar to the en Plein Bet, but in this case the player must choose two numbers and place bets on all the numbers that end with those digits. Depending on the player’s choice, this can become a 6 or 8 number bet. Therefore, a Finales 3/5 bet means that the wager has to be placed on 3, 13, 23, 33, and 5, 15, 25, 35.

Fixed call bets

As opposed to the variable call bets, fixed bets can only be placed on particular sections of the wheel and cannot change. In fact, these are generally outlined on the roulette racetrack for players to select from. There are four key fixed bets to wager on.

Neighbours of Zero

This fixed call bet is called Voisins de **Zero,**and similar to the variable bet that takes into account the neighbours of a number. Neighbours of zero take into account the 8 numbers on each side of 0.

This translates to a total of 17 numbers being wagered, which covers the entire section of the wheel from 22 until 25. This bet requires 9 chips to be made.

Thirds of the Wheel

Another interesting fixed call bet in French roulette is the Thirds of the Wheel, or Le Tiers du Cylindre. This bet covers the numbers that are present on the opposite side of the roulette where the Neighbours of Zero bet is located.

This bet covers 12 numbers on the wheel, for the section of the wheel from 33 to 27. This bet requires 6 chips to be made.

The Orphans

When you take into account all the pockets from the two previous fixed bets, there are some stray numbers that are included in neither bet. These are referred to the orphans, or the Orphelins.

A player must wager on the following 8 numbers when calling this fixed bet: 1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31, 34. This bet requires 5 chips to be made.

Zero Game

There is an additional fixed call bet in roulette that revolves around the Zero, called **Jeu de Zero.**Similar to the Voisins du Zero bet, but simply covering a smaller section of the wheel from 12 to 15 and including the 0. This wager covers a total of 7 bets.

Roulette table payouts

Whether you preferred roulette gambling on the table layout, or have a flair for placing call bets on the roulette racetrack, it is imperative to be aware of roulette payout amounts.

Not only is this variable information when deciding what types of bets to place, but a good understanding of payouts can help you decide which roulette strategy to adopt when playing roulette.
