What does the wheel look like?

To learn how to play Roulette, you must first understand the equipment that features in the game. No matter whether you’re playing European Roulette online or in person, you will see a practically identical setup. The two main parts of this game are the table and the wheel.

The table features all the European Roulette bets that are allowed. Whilst all versions of this game offer inside and outside bets, only certain games offer so-called racetrack bets. The Roulette table has different bet boxes for each type of bet. You can bet on individual numbers as well as groups of numbers, and each bet provides its own payout.

In this version of Roulette, there are a total of 37 numbers. These range from 1 through to 36 and include a zero. Whilst the zero has a green background, the rest of the numbers are split equally between red and black. To avoid any confusion, a number that has a red background on the European Roulette wheel will also have a red background on the betting table.

The wheel itself is split into 37 equal segments, one for each number. During the second part of the game, the wheel is spun and a ball is released onto it. Once the ball settles on a number, that number is declared the winner.

What’s in it for the house?

The house edge is the term that describes the advantage that a casino has in a particular game. In the case of European Roulette, the house edge is 2.7% This is based upon the fact that even if you bet on the broadest wagers, namely those that group 18 numbers together, you still won’t be betting on exactly 50% of the numbers.

The zero provides that marginal house edge that casinos depend on to stay profitable.

One of the reasons why European Roulette is more popular than American Roulette is, in fact, due to the house edge. The American version has both a zero and a double zero, and this additional number is the reason behind a house edge of 5.25%.

Mathematically speaking, the house dictates that over the course of hundreds of rounds, betting $100 on European Roulette would lose the player $2.70. The same amount played on American Roulette would lose the player $5.25.

However, just like a slot’s Return to Player Percentage (RTP), the house edge offers no guarantee of results over the course of a few rounds. Since the game is based on luck and every spin is random, the ball can land on any of the numbers.

What wagers can I place?

There are numerous bets that you can place on the European Roulette table. Standard bets can either be inside or outside bets. Many tables also feature racetrack bets in addition to standard ones.

European Roulette bets cover one or more numbers at a time and provide various payouts. Just like with other casino games, the riskier the wager, the better the payout available.

European Roulette outside bets

Here are the outside bets available on European Roulette:

• Low or High: This bet lets you cover 18 numbers at once, choosing between all the low (1-18) or high (19-36).
• Even or Odd: This is another way to bet on 18 numbers at once. In this case, you can choose between all the odd or even numbers.
• Red or Black: Bet on either all the red or black numbers at once.
• Column: The European Roulette table splits numbers 1-36 into three equal columns. With this bet, you’ll wager on all the numbers in one of these columns simultaneously. One of the available Column bets covers ‘1/4/7/10/13/16/19/22/25/28/31/34’.
• Dozen: Numbers 1-36 are also split into three boxes each with 12 numbers. An example of a Dozen bet is ‘1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/12’.

European Roulette inside bets

Here are all the inside bets available on European Roulette tables:

• Straight: This bet is the simplest one in the game as it only involved one number. An example of such a bet would be wagering on ‘2’ or ‘4’.
• Split: By placing your chip on the line between two adjacent numbers on the European Roulette table, you’ll be placing a Split bet. You could, for example, bet on ‘5/6’ or ‘8/9’.
• Street: Place a bet on all three numbers in a row. An example of such a bet would be ‘28/29/30’.
• Square: With this bet, you’ll group together four numbers simultaneously. Eligible Square bets are ones that share a corner on the European Roulette table, such as ‘14/15/17/18’.
• Six-Line: You can bet on six numbers simultaneously by wagering on two adjacent rows with a single bet. An example of a Six-Line bet is ‘4/5/6/7/8/9’.

European Roulette racetrack bets
